  • #67 Caffè sospeso

In working-class cafés in Napoli, people who experienced good luck often buy a coffee, then another one “pending”, which the barista can serve to anyone at his own discretion: a caffè sospeso.

A symbol of social trust and solidarity. Or, in the hands of marketeers and big coffee chains, a tool for increasing sales.

Regardless, it’s an act minimal enough to not to turn the donor into a hero, and small enough not to affect the receiver’s self-worth.

If such accessible acts of generosity make the donor feel good, and the receiver of a free coffee too…

And if it’s something almost everyone can do, not just billionaire philanthropists…

It’s an initiative worth spreading. Maybe not only for coffee.

  • #281 How to know what to write and why

To know what you’re going to write, you have to begin writing.

Similarly, to know why you’re writing, you have to begin writing.

The lure towards writing is what sets you in motion.

And so it goes for drawing. Singing. Building. Entrepreneurship. Creating. Meeting friends. Lovers. Life partners.

The act itself is what reveals both the purpose and the shape.

#260 Dancing circles around your gut

You’ll write the book until you start doubting if you have it in you to write it… then realize that the only way to find out is by actually writing the book.

You’ll prepare for the marathon until you start doubting if you can finish it… then realize that the only way to find out is by actually running the marathon.

You’ll build the business until you start doubting if this is a viable idea… then realize that the only way to find out is by actually building the business.

No matter how much you dance circles, ignoring what your gut has been telling you, deep down, you know: this is where you should’ve gone all along.

#47 Are we all just animal?

The scientific revolution has left a god-shaped hole in our heart
but where do we find purpose, when we think we are so smart?

    with all our might
    we try to unhide
    what’s out of sight

we fight to forge a light as bright
as the one that once brought life

without knowing the path that’s right
we rush to reach new heights
    in spite
of the world we feel inside

until the wind brings a storm
    the earth shakes
    shatters our home
    rivers overflow
    fire burns our flesh
    then where do we go?

when we know that with every ploy
    to make the world adhere
    we also destroy
    what we hold dear

    with actions this flawed
can we really pretend we are god
    or are we all
    just animal?
