  • #433 Feel it until it fades

You feel excitement. Happiness. Anger. Sadness.

But you are not your excitement or happiness.

Because if you allow yourself to cling to the emotions you desire, you’ll have not choice but to identify with undesirable ones, like anger and sadness, too.

Thus, you feel excitement – until it fades.

You feel happiness – until it fades.

You feel anger – until it fades.

You feel sadness – until it fades.

No matter which emotion rises, feel it until it fades. You’re going to be fine either way.

#137 Until here and no further

I’ll never believe I can write until I allow myself to write.

I’ll never believe I can grow my body stronger until I allow myself to do do something consistently to grow my body stronger.

I’ll never believe I can mend a mistreated mind until I allow my mind to be mended.

I’ll never believe I can heal a broken heart until I allow myself to start loving again.

You don’t start doing something because you believe you can do it.

You do it because you find leverage to allow yourself to do it, even if it feels outside your comfort zone.

    Until here, and no further.

  • #27 Appreciating the meaningless melody of a foreign language

Learning a foreign language is both a frustrating and liberating experience.

We can focus on the frustration of not understanding the words the way we understand our mother tongue. Or we can realize that without the words, we are free to fall back on other ways of capturing and understanding meaning.

A crying baby can be soothed by words it does not yet understand, because she senses what’s behind the sounds, lets the meaningless melody cradle her to sleep…

Similarly, we don’t always have to know what’s behind the words, as long as we make an effort to understand the meaning behind the sounds.

Hearing a foreign language brings us back to that wordless world the way we experienced it as a newborn, before we tried so hard to put everything within and around us into language.

It makes us remember, there’s more to life than our words will ever allow us to express. And somehow, that’s a soothing thought.

  • #329 The journey to overcoming self-doubt

My journey to overcoming self-doubt as a writer:

    • I write every day, even when I didn’t feel inspired.
    • I publish imperfect work every day, and saw nothing bad happened.
    • I publish frequently to reduce the “burden of quality” on each piece (if I publish every day, it doesn’t matter if some posts don’t do so well, because I’ll post again tomorrow anyway.

In short: write and publish to overcome the fear of writing and publishing. Yes, it can be as simple as that.
