  • #231 When everything is urgent

When everything is urgent, how do we know what to do first?

One solution is adding more nuance:

    What’s the most urgent?

    What’s the most important?

    Breathing is urgent.

    A crying child is urgent.

A toilet visit can be urgent.

Sending that email out tonight right before bed instead of tomorrow, maybe not so much?

    Here’s the important question:

If you’re going to prioritize the urgent matters anyway, why stress yourself out by calling everything urgent in the first place?

Making everything urgent devalues truly urgent matters.

Because when everything is urgent, nothing is urgent anymore.

#211 If you can do that, you can also do this

No one is bad at sticking to habits.

Because everyone’s day-to-day life is stitched together with recurring activities anyway, whether you consciously choose to do them or not.

Maybe you brush your teeth every day – and that has become a non-negotiable.

Maybe you wash your hands before every meal – and that has become a non-negotiable.

Maybe you shower every morning right after waking up – and that has become a non-negotiable.

Maybe you write every day – and that has become a non-negotiable.

Maybe you practice yoga three times a week – and that has become a non-negotiable.

Maybe you spend 10 minutes daily catching up with family, friends, acquaintances, or relatives you haven’t seen in a while – and that has become a non-negotiable.

    Habits are habits.

And that has an interesting consequence:

If you can do that, you can also do this.

  • #440 How to make choices that stand the test of time

    Victory passes.
    So does defeat.

    Exhaustion passes.
    So does excitement.

And because it all passes, the highest peaks and lowest lows are probably not your most reliable guides to make life decisions.

    Take a step back.

Wait until the emotions pass and you see clearly again.

Then you can make choices that stand the test of time.

    #46 Feigned feelings

feigned feelings lead to forced forging
of a bond, brittle, easily broken

but when i learn to listen
    to the winds whirling within
stop seeing them as a sin

when i hold them back no more
    forceful feelings finally roar
    revealing a hidden song
    sung secretly for so long

    my true self set free
    softly I breathe
    my melody into your mind
    feelings mingle, sometimes grind
    leaving the shyness far behind

    and hearing our songs entwined
    I am no longer blind
    to the insight
that we’ve been singing the same song
of a wordless world where we all belong

    at last I feel strong
    for we were always one
    blessed by a bond
    that can’t be undone
